Underwater Mallorca: Snorkeling and diving in Cala d’Or

Reading time: 06:40 minutes

Mallorca is an island meant to be enjoyed with all the senses. Its light, its cuisine, its relaxed pace... But for those who know how to look beyond the surface, the real wonder lies beneath. The Mediterranean Sea that laps the island’s southeast coast hides a fascinating underwater universe: submerged caves, shipwrecks teeming with life, and lush seagrass meadows (our underwater forests). If you’re drawn to the marine world, this post will be your gateway to snorkeling and diving in Mallorca.

A blue paradise beneath your feet

Just off the island’s southeastern coast, the sea turns crystal clear, shimmering in infinite shades of turquoise and blue. This area is where the coastline transforms into a mosaic of peaceful coves, dramatic cliffs, serene bays, and sandy seabeds covered with Posidonia - a Mediterranean seagrass that serves as a natural lung for the ecosystem and a safe haven for countless species.

To enjoy snorkeling in Mallorca, all you need is a mask and it’ll unlock a universe you’ll get addicted to. You’ll soon find yourself wanting to dive deeper every year. Just meters from the shore, you can spot shoals of saddled seabream, sea bream, rainbow wrasse, salema porgies, and with a bit of luck and a trained eye, even an octopus or a young grouper hiding among the rocks.

For those ready to go further, diving on Mallorca’s southeast coast unveils underwater walls, submerged caves, and tunnels where sunlight filters through to create almost magical landscapes. Diving lets you experience a world that’s otherwise hard to reach - you’ll feel in perfect symbiosis with this universe, moving in silence, broken only by your own breathing, while curious fish circle around you.

Top coves for snorkeling and diving near Inturotel

If you’re staying at Inturotel, you’re just minutes away from some of the best coves for exploring the underwater world.

Cala Esmeralda

Right in front of the hotel, this cove offers crystal-clear waters, shallow sandy zones, and as you swim along the rocky coastline, you’ll discover thriving Posidonia meadows. It’s an ideal spot to start snorkeling or diving and observe marine life in peace.

Wake up, grab your goggles, and dive in, there’s no better way to start your day in paradise.

Cala Mondragó & S’Amarador

The beaches of Mondragó Natural Park, which we explore in this [post], are stunning not only on land but also underwater. Their biodiversity makes them perfect for snorkeling in Mallorca. We recommend renting a bike to reach the park easily. If you drive, keep in mind parking is limited in high season and often full.

Cala Serena

A small, hidden cove near Cala Ferrera, ideal for those who want a more unspoiled setting. Here you’ll often spot sea urchins, sponges on the deeper rock walls, and stunning Posidonia meadows, especially on the left side of the cove heading out to sea, and to the right towards Cala Ferrera.

Adventure & snorkeling in Cabrera Island

If you love the sea and are up for an adventure, don’t miss this. We recommend an excursion to a unique island: Cabrera, declared a National Maritime-Terrestrial Park in 1991. Only a handful of park staff, researchers, students, and a small army post live there. Boats depart from Colònia de Sant Jordi, about 37 minutes from your hotel. Access is limited to a set number of boats and people per day, making this one of the most pristine environments in the Balearics.

Here you can observe rare species like the Balearic lizard (sargantana), the endemic Balearic shearwater (Puffinus mauretanicus), and native juniper trees (sivinars). If you book a diving excursion with a certified school (most leave from Palma), you might spot some of Cabrera’s true stars, the massive groupers.

What species can you find on Mallorca’s southeast coast?

The marine life in Mallorca is incredibly rich and diverse. In the southeastern waters, you’ll often spot:

Fish like seabream, groupers, gilthead bream, rainbow wrasse, damselfish (juveniles have a beautiful electric-blue tint), red mullet, ornate wrasse, small rays, and needlefish (common in late summer).

Invertebrates like octopuses, cuttlefish, sea anemones, red oysters, sponges (sacotragus spinosalus), beadlet anemones (Actinia equina), snakelocks anemones (Anemonia viridis), and fan worms (Sabella pavonina).

In rocky or deeper areas: moray eels and brightly colored nudibranchs.

Occasionally: turtles and larger rays in more distant dive spots.

All of this unfolds in an underwater setting filled with natural rock formations, sea tunnels, and seagrass meadows that make you feel part of a delicate and beautiful ecosystem.

Tips for a safe and respectful experience

Don’t touch anything: The beauty of the underwater world lies in observing without disturbing. Do not touch fish, rocks, or plants.

Use reef-safe sunscreen: Choose biodegradable sunscreens that won’t harm marine life or Posidonia.

Go with professionals: If it’s your first time diving in Mallorca, go through certified dive centers. They’ll provide safety, top-notch gear, and expert guides. The Inturotel reception can recommend trusted local centers.

Protect the Posidonia meadows: This is a protected species essential to the ecosystem. If you rent a boat, avoid anchoring on Posidonia, lower your volume, and never leave trash in the sea. Maritime surveillance enforces proper anchoring rules.

Connect with the deepest side of the Mediterranean

Snorkeling in Mallorca and diving along the southeast coast isn’t just a sport, it’s a new way to experience the island. To dive is to step into a parallel world full of life, silence, and color, where each encounter brings you closer to nature and your truest self.

Just steps from your hotel in Cala d’Or, on calm days at sunrise or sunset, it’s sometimes possible to spot dolphins - a once-in-a-lifetime moment that will fill you with joy and a sense of wonder.

Exploring Mallorca’s seabed means discovering its natural history, biodiversity, and vulnerability… and understanding why this small paradise deserves to be cared for.

This summer, make Inturotel your home base and dive into a new adventure. Feel again the excitement of your first plunge, the thrill of underwater discoveries, the sun on your skin after a swim.

Mallorca is waiting… and its magic lies beneath the surface too.
