Near the Inturotel Cala Esmeralda Beach Hotel & Spa is the cove that lends its name to the hotel, Cala Esmeralda. Also known as Caló des Corrals, this rocky, sandy little cove, enclosed by pines and classic Mediterranean plants, is an invitation to switch off from the outside world, sunbathing on the fine, soft sand between dips in the refreshing, crystal-clear waters.

In the southeast of the island, it takes less than ten minutes to reach Cala Mondragó and S’Amarador from any of the Inturotel hotels located in Cala D’Or. Both of these beaches in the Mondragó Natural Park are perfect for family fun or for couples. Lush nature lines the route that leads to them, traversing charming scenery comprised of Mediterranean forest, dunes and cliffs, where you can delight in the wealth of local flora and fauna. South of Cala Mondragó, Cala Màrmols, in Santanyí, is a little jewel surrounded by a memorable landscape, with its sheer rock faces and the marble cliffs it takes its name from. Difficult to access from s’Almunia or Cap Salines, this cove is for more adventurous explorers.

And without leaving the south of the island, a trip to Playa d’es Cargol is a must during your holiday on Mallorca. A pristine landscape consisting of over a kilometre of dunes and pine trees sculpted by the wind. Accessible from the lighthouse of Cap Salines, after a 30-minute walk.

The trail down to Cala Varques, a little further north, will etch itself into your memory. Parking is some distance away and the cove is reached after walking through a magical forest for around 20 minutes. As you enter the beach proper, the clear, turquoise waters and the cliffs around it, coupled with the karstic caves, will leave you speechless.

Almost at the north-eastern tip of the island, Cala Agulla is perfect for spending a day with small children, as the water is very shallow. Declared a ‘Natural Area of Special Interest’ (ANEI) in 1991, it has a wild ecosystem which is also super for hiking, mountain biking or horse riding.

Still in the north of the island, at Son Serra de Marina you could be forgiven for thinking you are in paradise. This is one of the few beaches where surfing is possible, on days with favourable winds.

Playa de Formentor, meanwhile - located near Pollença, in the north west - is an inspiring place whose beauty has captivated great figures from the world of art, culture and politics, including Winston Churchill, Agatha Christie or Charles Chaplin, and many others.

Cala Tuent is where you can fully experience the spectacle of the sea and the mountains in their purest state. Immersed in incredibly transparent waters, you will be awestruck by the sight of the highest peaks of the Serra de Tramuntana rising up around this cove like powerful custodians. We recommend you visit in low season and hike from Sóller, along one of the signposted routes.

This landscape is very similar to that of Cala Deià, another legendary place on the coast of Mallorca that enraptured celebrities like Ava Gardner, Gabriel García Márquez or Stephen Hawking, as well as its great discoverer, in international terms - the poet Robert Graves, who every single evening for decades would go to bathe in its immaculate waters.

Here, too, we recommend a visit in off-peak season; leave the car in the village of Deià and walk down the beautiful path leading to the sea.
