Between sky and sea - the world of Joan Miró in Mallorca
In Mallorca, the light touches everything in its own unique way. Sometimes softly, sometimes with an intensity that completely transforms what you see. Perhaps that’s why Joan Miró found here, between the blue of the sea and the quiet of his studio, the perfect place to give form to his inner world.
The island that inspired a genius
Miró arrived in Mallorca in 1956 and stayed here for the rest of his life. On this island, he found what he described as “the balance between the sky and the sea.” It was in Palma where he set up his studio, the Taller Sert, designed by his friend and architect Josep Lluís Sert. It became a creative refuge surrounded by nature, a place where art and life were one and the same.

Today, that space is part of the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró, a museum and cultural centre that houses more than 6,000 of the artist’s works and offers visitors a unique insight into the mind and creative process of one of the greatest artists of the 20th century.
Walking through his studios -Taller Sert and Taller Son Boter- feels like stepping into Miró’s soul: brushes, sketches, sculptures, pigments, and walls covered with ideas. Everything remains as if the artist might return at any moment.
Paysage Miró: A spark of inspiration
Until January the 11th 2026, the Foundation, together with several other institutions in Palma, hosts the exhibition “Paysage Miró”, a fascinating exploration of the artist’s connection with nature. Through paintings, sculptures, and drawings, the exhibition reveals how the Mallorcan landscape was far more than just a backdrop for Miró: it was a constant source of energy, life, and imagination.

The show creates a dialogue between his work and the Mediterranean environment. Lines become horizons, colours become light, and brushstrokes evoke the movement of the wind. Each work seems to breathe the same air that fills the island.
The spaces of Paysage Miró
The Paysage Miró exhibition extends beyond the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró Mallorca, unfolding across four emblematic venues in Palma. Together, they offer a multi-faceted journey through Miró’s creative universe.
At La Lonja de Palma, under the title The Initial Force, visitors can admire bronze sculptures that interact with the Gothic architecture and evoke Miró’s first creative impulses.
At Es Baluard Museu, the exhibition Painting Between Things highlights how Miró expanded the limits of painting, blending gesture, sign, and material.
At Casal Solleric, Colour and Its Shadow explores the relationship between painting and sculpture as intertwined artistic languages.

Finally, at the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró Mallorca, The Magic Spark offers a more intimate reflection on the artist’s inner landscape, his bond with nature, objects, friendships, and places that shaped his life and work.
Together, these exhibitions form an immersive experience that goes beyond viewing art: Paysage Miró weaves a cultural map across Palma, connecting different spaces into one unified story.
Miró and Mallorca: a shared language
Beyond art, Miró captured something essential about the Majorcan spirit: serenity, a deep connection with the land, and the ability to see everyday life with fresh eyes. His work, profoundly free, reminds us that inspiration can arise from the simplest things: a stone, a plant, the sound of the sea at dusk.

Visiting the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró is much more than a cultural visit. It’s a sensory and emotional experience, a walk through colour, silence, and creativity. It’s also a way to discover another side of Mallorca—the island of artists, dreamers, and those who find beauty in life’s small details.
A perfect cultural escape from Cala d’Or
If you’re staying at Inturotel Cala Esmeralda, visiting the Foundation is an ideal cultural escape to pair with peaceful days by the sea. The drive from Cala d’Or takes you through the island’s heart. consider taking the scenic route through Felanitx, Porreres, Montuïri, and Algaida. You might even stop for a traditional Mallorcan meal in Algaida on your way there or back. These villages still preserve the atmosphere of the Mallorca that captivated Miró.
Let yourself be carried away by art and the magic of the Mediterranean. Like Miró, Mallorca has the power to awaken that inner spark that transforms the way you see the world.
